Spiritual Ecology: Practices to HONOR and ENGAGE with the Sacred Matrix of ALL Life

by Michelle Waterloo

  • Operate from this Truth - humans are a co-creative part of a greater planetary ecology - and act accordingly
  • environmental activism = consistent daily commitment to small, cumulatively powerful practices of conservation and stewardship; everyone counts and no act is too small; perform with prayerful intent and be a spiritual force for the greater good
  • take FES "Gaia Green" formula to nurture your energetic connection to the earth; http://www.fesflowers.com/gaia-green.htm
  • plant trees or donate to organizations that plant trees, such as Tree People in Los Angeles
  • get a community garden plot and grow flowers, fruit and vegetables
  • volunteer with/donate to eco-preservation groups like Sierra Club or Greenpeace
  • choose live plants over cut flowers; after enjoying your plant indoors, give it a real life by transplanting it in an outdoor garden
  • it’s "Earth" , not "dirt" - never discard soil and potting mix in the trash - the formation of topsoil takes 200 years - work it back into your lawn or flower garden
  • pick up litter wherever and whenever you see it: beaches, parks, public areas - don’t wait for "someone else" to do it
  • recycle at home and at work (if a recycling program does not exist, start one!; buy products with recycled content whenever possible
  • get yourself removed from junk mailing lists; use e-format rather than paper format for bills and correspondence wherever possible
  • carpool; reduce unnecessary use of your car and plan your trips and errands efficiently; consider a hybrid vehicle for your next lease or purchase
  • choose energy-saving light bulbs and appliances; develop mindful, non-wasteful personal habits of use with electricity, gas and water
  • install low-flush controls on your toilet and use water-saving showerheads
  • when doing laundry, wash full loads only; use cold water rather than warm or hot water and save energy
  • give gratitude to Water for supporting all Life on Earth; read Masaru Emoto’s "Messages in Water"
  • say grace over meals, be mindful of the life generously given to sustain yours and the work of many hands that brought it to your table
  • carry a reusable grocery tote rather than using "paper or plastic" bags from the store, but if you do use them - recycle them
  • buy your produce from local farmers markets and support independent organic farms
  • choose whole foods like fresh locally grown fruits and vegetables, rather than packaged processed foods
  • adopt shelter animals and save lives; do not patronize "puppy mills" or pet stores
  • start a compost pile if you own a home and have a garden
  • use natural pest control in your garden, like ladybugs and mantids, rather than poisons; add earthworms instead of chemical fertilizers
  • consider conscious investing; support companies that practice fair trade and eco-awareness; boycott those that do not
  • dispose of hazardous household waste and E-waste (electronic) correctly; contact your municipal sanitation department for details; to learn about types of waste and proper disposal methods, go to http://ladpw.org/epd/hhw/
  • don’t send useful items to landfill; donate unwanted clothing, household items, books, and appliances to thrift stores that fund charities; the items will have a second life and generate revenue for a worthy cause
  • cultivate a sense of "wabi sabi" and appreciate the beauty of the patina of age, wear, and history to balance the consumer mentality of "shiny and new"
